The Protozoa Research Unit (PRU) is a dynamic and multidisciplinary team dedicated to the study of Apicomplexa parasites Cryptosporidium and Giardia. These parasites cause diarrheal diseases known as cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis, which affect humans and animals alike, with significant economic repercussions on health and agriculture.
Our research integrates environmental surveillance, genetics, genomics, and cell biology to explore the biology, ecology, and evolution of these parasites. Our ultimate goal is to reduce the burden of both diseases in New Zealand.
